Carb teardown, by the book

Morning session with the shop manual open to page 4-9. Both carbs fully apart, laid out on the tray, and the first cleaning pass.

Coffee, then the manual. Last night was enthusiasm; this morning was procedure.

The shop manual’s carburetor section (page 4-9 and thereabouts) has the exploded views you need, and I photographed the pages I kept flipping back to so they’d be here with the parts photos. Once the manual is scanned into the library they’ll be searchable, but for now the photos do the job.

Layout

The red tray in the photos is how I kept two nearly identical carburetors from getting mixed up: secondary in the top half, primary in the bottom, each one’s screws and jets in the compartment next to it. It sounds obvious. It is also the step that people skip and regret.

Cleaning

First pass today was carb cleaner, a brass brush and compressed air. Jets held up to the light until I could see through them. The jet needle got cleaned by hand, gently, because scratching the taper changes how the bike runs at mid-throttle.

After lunch the tank came off. That’s the next entry.

Photos

Primary (left) and secondary (right) side by side on the bench, before the morning's work. Manual page 4-9 in the corner.
Primary carb body, engine side. The large bore and the idle mixture screw boss.
Looking through the primary bore with the throttle cable still attached. Butterfly slightly open.
Primary from the airbox side with the linkage removed.
Primary, airbox side, showing the three small passages above the bore. Those need to be clear.
Primary carb with the top cover and the accelerator pump cover in place, before removal.
Top of the primary with the vent fitting. Small screws on the tray are from the cover.
Float bowl cavity on the primary with the float removed. Float valve seat and main jet holder visible.
Secondary body with the fuel inlet elbow. The fitting on the side is where the crossover tube seats.
Secondary float bowl cavity. Brass float, pivot pin, and the float valve with its spring clip.
Vacuum chamber side of the secondary. The slide rides in the bore under this cap.
Same part, blurry because I was trying to hold it, the phone, and a screwdriver. Kept for the angle.
Shop manual, carburetor exploded view. The linkage and the choke lever side.
Shop manual, same page, slightly wider.
Shop manual page 4-9, Carburetor Assembly. The note about new O-rings on both ends of the carburetor pipe is worth reading twice.
Page 4-9 in full. Air cut-off valve, throttle stop screw, slow jet, main jet, float, jet needle, throttle valve.
Carburetor Removal and Float Chamber pages. Note the warning about not prying between the insulator and the engine.
Everything on the tray at 11:34. Secondary top, primary bottom, small parts in the compartments. This is the layout I used to keep them straight.
Cleaning the jet needle. Paper towel, brass brush, carb cleaner. Don't scratch the taper.
